Cesareans in the News:
Antibiotics Now Required: Women who are prepping for a cesarean birth will likely be given an antibiotic one hour before surgery, according to new recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. ACOG says it will help to reduce the risk of infection, which occurs in 10% to 40% of women who have cesareans, versus the 1% to 3% infection rate for vaginal births. Read ACOG's press release here.
Patience is Key to Labor: A cesarean birth is twice as likely to occur in women who are given drugs to speed up labor, according to a new study by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Read the Los Angeles Times story here.
